Slater Kodish dominated an industry by pretending to be a ten-year-old (actually, technically ten and a half).
Slater Kodish broke into the gaming industry, playing a first-person shooter no less; an industry that thousands of people struggle to get any traction in.
Slater Kodish plays Call Of Duty, and if he JUST played Call Of Duty on stream, the chances are he would have never been found.
But, Slater is unique, hilarious, and brings a level of fun to his stream and content that made him viral.
So what made specifically Slater Kodish blow up and stand out?
That's what I'll be breaking down for you in this article.
But first, let's go over a bit more about Slater Kodish and what he has been able to accomplish.
Slater Kodish Breakdown
Slater Kodish has been able to amass a massive following on TikTok, Twitch and Instagram:
With the use of his signature series, Slater Kodish has been able to leverage his content to make him hundreds of thousands of dollars online.
Enough to gift people thousands of dollars on stream and be extremely generous with his earnings.
Sidebar: Shout out to Slater for also just being an overall awesome human.
Slater Kodish's Signature Series
Yeah, you're reading those numbers right.
All of them are in the millions, going as high as nearly 40 million views.
Let's discuss how he did it.
For Slater, the big virality all started with his short-form video content, specifically on TikTok.
We're going to be breaking that down first, and then we'll move into what I call "SS Layers" which are adding on new signature series forms or variations to your content to expand and test.
For those of you who are in The Accelerator, you know I have done this with Superhero Jacked as well.
What Is Slater Kodish's Signature Series?
This is where it gets really fun.
Slater Kodish uses a voice changer to sound like a 12-year-old (10 and a half, actually) and plays Call Of Duty with people while he records their reaction to him telling jokes (“him”, in their eyes, being a random 10-1/2-year-old).
I have been hooked numerous times, watching tons of different videos.
The craziest part?
Half the time he is telling the same jokes.
If you scroll through or watch a bunch of his content you’ll notice that a lot of the time he is:
- Pretending to call out to his mom for pizza rolls
- Talking about his math teacher’s knockers
- Talking about getting mc-twisted
- Asking girls to be his girlfriend
There's obviously more to it than just some jokes and Slater being an awesome and funny human, though...right?
Signature Series Deep Dive
Slater is really good at what he does.
He's obviously hilarious, but he's also a great marketer.
He knows that you have to hook your audience, give them a bite-size piece of awesomeness and a reason to stick around until the end of the content (in this case, the videos).
Let's break down some of Slater Kodish's Top Performing Video (on TikTok):
Top Performing Video: 39.4M Views on TikTok and 72M on YouTube
The Hook: Slater starts the video with 10-½-year-old (voice changer) him, apparently yelling to his mom: "Mom, get off the WiFi, I'm not gonna be able to win the game if you're on it, I'm lagging!" and you can hear the people he is playing with laughing.
The Pivot: Slater doesn't just pivot into the whole video of him playing, he immediately jumps into the next joke and starts telling a story. The pivot joke is:
Random Person: "You have good grades?"
10-½-year-old Slater: "I do, especially in my math class, cuz my math teacher...she's got these really big knockers!"
And, of course, the people he is playing with start cracking up (because who wouldn't!?)
The Story: He goes in order of how the game plays out, but he clips it up in a way that jumps from joke to joke, and the reactions of the people he is playing with - all while moving through the actual gameplay and showing us his win, loss, and everything in between.
Other Notes: Slater also keeps the video extremely engaging. Big bold purple text is popping up throughout the video to show the commentary, and he also overlays a different GIF or funny image every time he and the people he is playing with start breaking out into laughter.
Key Components: Slater Kodish is not only hilarious, an awesome human, extremely unique, and a great marketer - but he's also an incredible storyteller.
Signature Series Layers
Slater's first TikTok post was on March 31, 2020.
He didn't start testing out some gaming content on TikTok until his next video, December 9, 2020.
Still no voice changer just yet, though.
He had some success with some gaming videos, but his content really hit when he posted his first voice-changer on August 1, 2022.
He REALLY started making some waves about a month or so later.
He got the voice down (previously he sounded a bit older), and began testing hooks and storytelling.
But Slater didn't just stop on TikTok.
He also used his signature series to explode on YouTube, with millions of views there - one of which got SEVENTY TWO MILLION, and tons ranging from 1-25M.
And just to be clear: that 72M view video is the same video we broke down above, equating to 111M views between TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
So could Slater just keep posting these shorts and call it a day?
Probably.
They drive a ton of traffic to his stream and obviously bring in a ton of followers.
SS Layer One: Slater's Twitch Stream
Slater's voice changer content actually originated on his Twitch stream, the place that started it all for him - and this is where he brings his audience to keep the content going.
As I type this out, I'm watching his stream and he is playing Call Of Duty: Warzone and engaging with his Twitch Chat.
For example, here's what someone just said in his chat:
"First time in stream, love the YouTube! Trying to make it where you at. Keep it up, boss."
And then, while talking to his chat with his normal voice, he jumps right back into the gameplay chat with his voice changer on.
So his signature series stays strong from the point of finding him with his short-form video content all the way to the stream where you can watch him live recreating the fun with new random people.
SS Layer Two: Long-Form Video Content
The next layer Slater uses is his long-form video content on his YouTube Channel.
While his short-form video (his main signature series) blew up with YouTube Shorts, Slater also has longer videos ranging from 3 to 15 minutes in length.
He only has a total of 17 of these videos, but he has put out 3 in the last month alone, and his most popular content has between 1-2.5M views - with every video in the hundreds of thousands.
And guess what...
These videos are also of him using his voice changer and taking advantage of the thing he knows makes him extremely unique.
How To Replicate Slater Kodish's Success
The best part about signature series is that it is unique.
You can go start making videos of you playing video games with a voice-changer, but you'll never be able to steal Slater Kodish's unique branding; with his hilarious jokes, and incredible personality.
That said, there are clear takeaways from Slater's Creator Case Study:
- Master Your Hook
- Master Your Storytelling
- Find Your Uniqueness
- Add SS Layers
- Post Cross-Platform (Best for Short-Form Video)
- You Can Use Your Signature Series To Drive Your Audience Elsewhere
For me, at Superhero Jacked I use my signature series to collect leads onto my email list.
For Slater, that's driving his audience to his Twitch channel to watch him stream live.
But I held back the biggest secret of them all:
Do what you love.
You can tell Slater wakes up every single day excited to create content he loves.
So remember to: Build a business you wake up excited about, to live the life you dream about.
